Overcoming the Fear of Becoming a CHT: Here’s How to Start

Overcoming the Fear of Becoming a CHT: Here’s How to Start

When it comes to studying to become a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT), I hear a lot of the same comments. Therapists are eager—they want to study and achieve certification—but something is holding them back. They have the years of experience, they’ve logged the hours, but fear or self-doubt seems to stop them.

In this post, I’ll address some of the biggest concerns therapists have and how they can overcome them. Let’s talk about fear, failure, and how to take the steps you need to reach your goals.

Overcoming the Fear of Becoming a CHT: Here’s How to Start

Why Are Therapists Afraid to Take the Leap?

Fear is often at the root of what holds people back. I hear things like:

– “I’m new to the field. I just don’t know enough.”

– “I’ve been a therapist for 20-25 years, and I’m worried I can’t memorize everything.”

– “I haven’t taken a test in a long time. What if I fail?”

Sound familiar? These thoughts are common, but they don’t have to define you. Whether you’re just starting out or have decades of experience, the underlying fear is often the same.

The Biggest Fear: Fear of Failure

Fear of failure is the number one concern I hear. Let’s break it down. Why are we so afraid to fail?

Sometimes, it’s about judgment. You think, “What if I study and fail? People will know.” But here’s the truth: Their opinions don’t pay your bills, and they aren’t treating your patients. So, who cares what they think?

Other times, it’s our own judgment. We’re harsh on ourselves. I get it—I’m my own worst critic. But here’s what I’ve learned: You have to be kind to yourself. Fear and doubt are normal, but they don’t have to stop you.

Where Does This Fear Come From?

A lot of fear comes from the stories we hear. People say, “Oh, the CHT exam is so hard,” and that narrative becomes ingrained in your mind. Their story becomes your story.

When I first started, every time I told someone I wanted to become a CHT, they’d say, “Wow, that’s really hard.” Hearing that over and over could have stopped me, but I didn’t let it. Here’s the thing: Just because it was hard for them doesn’t mean it will be hard for you.

You’re capable of doing hard things. Other people have done it, and if they can do it, so can you. Don’t take on other people’s fears and failures—they don’t belong to you.

Breaking Down the Fear

Let’s address the specific fears:

1. Can You Cover All the Topics?

Of course, you can. You’re capable of learning everything you need.

2. Can You Memorize the Information?

Yes, you can. You’ve already mastered so much in your career.

3. Can You Apply the Knowledge to Answer Questions?

Absolutely. It might take some help or guidance, but you can do it.

Fear and doubt are the only things standing in your way. You’ve already proven your capability by earning degrees and working in this field.

The Fear of Judgment

If you were the only one who knew you failed, would you still be afraid? Probably not. The fear of failure often ties into a fear of judgment—what others will think if you don’t succeed.

Here’s my advice: Let it go. Their opinions don’t matter. Focus on what you want and how you’re going to achieve it.

Be kind to yourself. Work through the fear. You’ve done hard things before, and you can do this too.

Why Becoming a CHT Is More Than Passing an Exam

Getting your CHT certification isn’t just about passing an exam—it’s about gaining confidence and respect in your profession. It’s a personal career goal that shows your dedication and expertise.

When you become a CHT, you earn the respect of surgeons and other healthcare professionals. They’ll see those letters and know you’re capable of treating any patient that comes your way. It’s about more than the letters—it’s about being the best.

Why You Need to Want It

No one can make you become a CHT. This has to be something you want for yourself. Whether you’re just starting out or have been in the field for years, this goal is personal.

I’ve worked with therapists for over five years now, and most tell me the same thing: “I’ve been thinking about this for a long time. It’s my time to do it.”

Becoming a CHT is about proving to yourself that you can do hard things. It’s about being the best for your patients and for yourself.

You’re Capable of Greatness

Here’s what I know: You’re capable. You have the years of experience, the hours, and the knowledge. You’ve done hard things before, and you can do this too.

If fear or doubt is holding you back, get the help you need to overcome it. Investing in yourself is the best way to achieve your goals.
