Hey everyone, it’s Hoang! As an occupational and certified hand therapist, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to dive deep into the world of hand therapy. And let me tell you, it’s amazing how many different directions you can take your career in this field.
So, you wanna know where OTs can work? Let me tell you, the options are endless!

Healthcare Settings
First off, there’s the classic healthcare setting. You’ll find us in hospitals, rehab centers, and skilled nursing facilities. Think broken bones, surgeries, or chronic illnesses. Our job? Help people get back to doing what they love. It’s super rewarding to see someone regain their independence.
Here are some of the things OTs do in healthcare settings:
- Work with patients to improve their ability to perform daily activities, such as dressing, bathing, and eating.
- Help patients regain strength and coordination after an injury or illness.
- Teach patients how to use adaptive equipment to live more independently.
- Provide support and education to patients and their families.
Schools
Schools are another place OTs shine. We work with kids who have learning differences, physical challenges, or just need a little extra support to thrive in the classroom. It’s all about helping them learn and play. It’s a blast!
Here are some of the things OTs do in schools:
- Help children develop the fine motor skills they need to write and participate in other classroom activities.
- Work with children to improve their sensory processing skills, which can help them focus and learn.
- Modify the classroom environment to meet the needs of all students.
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other therapists to create a supportive learning environment for all children.
Community-Based Settings
But wait, there’s more! OTs are out there in the community too. Mental health clinics, home health, you name it. We help people manage everyday life, overcome challenges, and find joy. It’s about building skills and confidence.
Here are some of the things OTs do in community-based settings:
- Help people with disabilities live independently in their own homes.
- Provide support to people with mental health conditions, such as schizophrenia or depression.
- Help people who have been injured or ill regain the skills they need to live safely at home.
- Work with older adults to maintain their independence and quality of life.

Industry and Workplace
And let’s not forget the workplace! We make sure jobs are designed to keep people safe and healthy. It’s called ergonomics, and it’s super important. We prevent injuries and help people work smarter, not harder.
Here are some of the things OTs do in industry and workplaces:
- Assess workplaces for hazards that could lead to injuries.
- Design and implement ergonomic programs to prevent injuries.
- Train workers on how to use equipment safely and efficiently.
- Help businesses comply with safety regulations.
Specialized Areas in Occupational Therapy
Okay, so those are some of the main places you can find an OT. But there are even more specialized areas within the field of occupational therapy. Some of these include:
- Pediatrics: Focusing on children with developmental delays, disabilities, or learning challenges.
- Geriatrics: Working with older adults to maintain independence and quality of life.
- Mental Health: Supporting individuals with mental health conditions to develop coping skills and life management strategies.
- Hand Therapy: Treating conditions affecting the hand, wrist, and upper extremity.

Mental Health and Beyond
Did you know that occupational therapists also work in mental health? It’s true! We help people with conditions like depression or anxiety learn to manage their lives and build skills. You can work in hospitals, clinics, or community programs.
- Addressing mental health: Occupational therapists working in mental health settings help individuals with conditions like depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia develop coping skills and life management strategies.
- Community-based programs: They often work in community mental health centers, providing support and guidance to individuals as they transition back into the community.
