Misconceptions About Becoming a Certified Hand Therapist

Hey there, it’s Hoang! One of the biggest misconceptions about becoming a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) or even wanting to sit for the hand therapy exam is that you have to be some kind of uber-smart person or an A-student. People think you need to have a ton of time to devote to studying, and that it takes years and years of preparation. I want to break up some of these misconceptions because I believe that becoming a CHT doesn’t have to do with your grades or how long you’ve been studying.

Do You Have to Be an A-Student to Pass the Exam?

I know for a fact that I was never an A-student. If you’ve ever heard my stories, I actually applied to become a teacher assistant in my OT program, and I was the only one who didn’t get the job. I wasn’t one of those people who constantly made straight A’s and found everything super easy. I was a B/C student, and I had to work hard to understand concepts in a way that made sense to me.

I’ve spoken to several different fieldwork coordinators at universities, and some of them believe that students need to have A’s to go into a hand therapy setting. But I don’t think that’s true. You’re already smart! You got into the OT or PT program, you’re passing your classes—that’s as far as you need to be.

I believe that what really matters is passion. If you have a passion for becoming an expert in your field and earning that hand therapy certification, then you can do it. You don’t have to have seen every type of case—everyone learns in different settings.

So if you love helping people with hand and arm problems and want to be an expert, I hope this helps you realize that you don’t need perfect grades. You just need the passion for it.

Do You Need Years of Study to Pass the Exam?

Another big misconception is that you need years and years to study. Some people think they need to start way in advance or do it all on their own. But that’s not true!

There are programs now that can help you cut through the overwhelming amount of information, making studying easier. There are groups that can connect you with the right people and like-minded therapists.

When I studied for the exam, it took me a long time because I was doing it alone. I didn’t have anyone I knew who was studying, and I wasn’t connected with a support system. But now, I see that everyone who studies for the exam—especially those in my program—becomes a better therapist, a better thinker, and a better decision-maker.

What Really Matters When Preparing for the Exam?

Studying for the CHT exam helps you grow as a therapist. Whether you’re an OT or PT, if you want to become a Certified Hand Therapist, it’s really about giving your patients the best outcomes.

You don’t need years of study; you just need accountability and focus. Getting started is the hardest part. But once you do, the next challenge is keeping up with it. That’s why I created the Hand Exam Prep Program—it’s something I wish I had when I was studying.

This program would have made studying less painful and less lonely. It would have helped me understand concepts faster and better so that I didn’t have to keep reading the same thing over and over. A program like this can cut down your study time significantly. Not only does it keep you accountable (we meet up every week), but it also keeps you focused so you know exactly what to study and where to put your energy.

Do You Have the Right Support to Succeed?

I wish I had someone I could call and ask detailed questions when I was studying. Not just “yes or no” answers, but someone who could explain things to me in a way that helped me understand. That’s exactly what I aim to do with the Hand Exam Prep Program.

If you’ve been thinking about sitting for the exam and you’re struggling to get started, or you’re having trouble staying motivated, this program can help. We are opening May 15th through the 24th, and for this session, we’re offering six months of access for the price of three months.
